Website Traffic

Filed under: Website Traffic — admin @ 1:19 am

Traffic on the Internet means money. If you have a lot of quality page views and good content with the right money model, you can make money and its easy.

Its really too bad driving quality traffic takes so much time and effort else everyone could be rich from it. Let me start by saying that there is only one overnight answer, read that paid, to quick Search Engine Traffic (see the entry on SEM). At least instant traffic and web fame are very unlikely and would be the exception rather than the rule.

There are flashes of super fast growth in web traffic for sure. There are new topics all the time or some topic catches fire, and mostly because in some way it is really super good. Value drives traffic better than anything short of a mention on Oprah, Glenn Beck or some other Fame Flash.

You will likely find that if you deliver a lot of high quality content in a space that is not too competitive, you will find traffic growth coming your way. It takes time, a lot of effort and some luck perhaps. It also doesn’t hurt to do a few things beyond just the content until your market starts driving traffic to you by itself.

Without content at the destination of a click you typically won’t get anything much done except see a high bounce rate from your pages. If you are out to make money, you need the right model to profit from the traffic that comes your way or you won’t make anything.

There are simply a number of things that all have to go right at least once to make money on the web. If you do have good content available on the web, there are many ways to go about igniting the traffic that may even lead to the kind of viral marketing  reaction that most can only dream about.

So, my main advice on making money with your website? Start with valuable content doing something that you really like or are interested in. At least if you like the subject the work itself will be of value to you and have the most chance of being valuable to someone else interested in the same topic.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

Filed under: Website Traffic — admin @ 3:57 pm

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is the mirror to Search Engine Optimization (SEO). For our purposes, SEM is using web advertising to drive traffic to your website.

SEM is about the only way I know to drive lots of traffic to your website overnight. Faster than overnight is really possible.

Google Adwords is the SEM tool that I am most familiar with. With the right Adwords budget you can set up a keyword phrase campaign and drive a huge amount of traffic. You can budget, measure, throttle, localize, globalize and more functions that are almost magical marketing methods.

Two questions should come to mind.

Can you do it profitably?

Can you do anything of  value with the traffic that comes your way?

In many cases the answer is yes. For a lot of people the cost is just too expensive or the traffic is just not qualifiable.

Adwords and similar programs are pretty much unparalleled in the speed, scalability, flexibility,  and affordability to find out if they will work for you. There is a lot of competition in the space these days and a lot of upwards pressure on the price of ads for a declining economy.

Can SEM work for you? Most can afford to find that out. While you might be able to do this for yourself, the right expert likely is the pathway to actually succeeding.

Should you try it? In most cases I would say the answer is yes. You should at least evaluate the space if you need more customers. Just make sure that you pilot and test effectively and heed the results. SEM can be wildly expensive and produce nothing of value if not done properly.

If you can make it work with the right Return on Investment (ROI)? Well, then you can throttle the website traffic like you can a motorcycle or car. SEM is typically the only way to do that quickly.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Filed under: Website Traffic — admin @ 3:56 pm

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is primarily the organic results of the Search Engines. This means the non paid part.

The big three search engines, Bing, Yahoo and Google all have ads around the regular or organic results. For the most part ads are off to the right and sometimes at the top of the results. Regular, also known as organic, results are on the left starting somewhere near the top of that page. The top three spots get most of the traffic.

Search engine optimization is a black art to a degree. No one really knows exactly how everything exactly works and even if they did know, it changes and morphs all the time.

Basically, good content and value for the user tend to win in the end. However, there are a lot of shenanigans going on that have to be contended with and also some very large companies that are after those coveted three top organic spots.

To make this even harder, more content is being created and much of it just for the back links if produces. If the space you are after is crowded with big players, it may well be impossible to out do them for these top spots. New areas and niches are far easier to get top ranking but if it is valuable space, competition won’t be far behind.

While good value and content are almost always key, there are things that you can do to gain ground in Search Engines and drive more traffic. Some of the more important ones are:

  • Backlinks
  • Long Tail Keyword Targeting
  • Article Marketing
  • Forum Posting
  • Blog Posting
  • Page and Keyword Optimization

There are millions of articles detailing various plans and offerings to make you rich or get top ranking on Google. Don’t believe any quick fixes. There are some who can make pretty impressive things happen, but it is not easy nor cheap to gain valuable ground in a mature competitive space.

For example, if someone can get me top global organic ranking for the term “Business Consulting”, please let me know. I would love to meet the person who could get me that top ranking for a small fee.

Logical Method is already at the top of Google as a search term and that happened all by itself, organically. So, before you do SEO, make sure you know the goal, the method and the competition.

Commenting on Blogs

Filed under: Website Traffic — admin @ 3:56 pm

One of the best ways to get more quality traffic and build links in the short term in many cases is by Authentic commenting on blogs. Careful, authentic, and respectful comments  to blogs/forums/etc have been a great way to drive quality traffic to websites. Doing this also helps extend to the right communities and networks.

You need to be VERY careful to keep value in mind. This blog is inundated with comments in the queue that say something like “great article” or “nice post”. I have to delete them and the spam that comes with them as even with the best of intentions (some of these posters might actually have good intentions I guess) they add no value to the reader. They would build links for the writer if I approved them. So, I am compelled to delete them.

I love quality comments on the blogs I am involved in, but they really must add something to the conversation to be approved. Quality comments that add value are often the most powerful aspect of a blog. As usual on the web, its really about authentic value.

So, when you comment on someone’s blog and especially when you are doing it to build traffic for your site or blog, add something to the conversation. To do that, the conversation needs to be directly related to where you are coming from, both intellectually and web-wise.

Article Marketing

Filed under: Website Traffic — admin @ 3:55 pm

Do articles drive traffic to websites? Sure they do. Is it an overnight answer to your Search Engine Optimization Traffic needs? Not very likely.

If you write an article and it does not generate traffic a lot of immediate traffic, don’t be surprised. The secret is out and lots of people are writing articles and syndicating them. They are using content generating tools to make more and more content. But where is the value to the reader in that? It isn’t adding much.

Articles work and do drive traffic but it takes time and effort to do the right things the right way. You likely are getting used to the mantra of quality content and adding value. Articles should follow the same basic principles.

Saving your business could be just a few minutes away.

Filed under: STEER Methodology — admin @ 12:00 pm

Business gets tougher in some ways all the time for many of us. More businesses are at risk today than ever before. The dreadful economy, greater complexity, greater competition, advancing technology, higher costs, shifting sands and similar challenges are really making it challenging to survive, much less thrive.

One major issue is that many businesses are just so much more complicated to operate now. Complexity not only translates to higher costs, but it just makes it harder to be organized enough to get everything done so that a business owner or manager can have the time needed to focus on their core business.

What can a business owner do to make sure that the right things are done and the wrong things are avoided? Good question.

Is there a simple answer?

Well, to some extent, for most business owners, there are a couple of things that do help a great deal. In fact, these answers are common sense (see the previous article on business and common sense).

Fact: Most businesses have no written goals. Does your business? How about a simple strategy document, checklists for critical routine activities, a corporate calendar, a well organized corporate computer drive with routine backups?

While these business tasks may seem too simple to even suggest, I have found that even the largest companies I have worked with often don’t do a very good job of these executing these critical elements of success. Conversely, many times big businesses have so many different kinds of these documents and processes that they often create a bigger mess than they were trying to organize in the first place.

How can this be? Most any small business owner will say yes to the question “Is your business worth a few minutes a week to you?”.

Most of the time I get the “yes” answer but that they are already working 60 to 80 hours a week. So, I guess the answer must truly be yes. But, I find over and over again, businesses that most are tragically missing a a few very simple, quick and easy tasks that literally could easily cost them their business or at the least a lot of waste and frustration.

Over the next few articles I will be laying out these simple critical elements that I have seen so many businesses, large and small, simply not do an adequate job of.  Most of the time it eventually costs them dearly. Sometimes it costs them their business.

Again, the question really is, “Is your business worth a few minutes a week managing a few things that will save you hours of effort and maybe even your business. Think that’s not possible? Think again and check back for future posts.

And, check out the section on Goals, Strategies, Tactics and Tasks/Experiments.  I think many of you will be glad you did.

Create a quick Strategy Map and Meet Your Business Goals

Filed under: STEER Methodology — admin @ 1:13 pm

It seems clear to most that targets are easier to hit if you know what they are. Business Goals should be thought of as targets. If you don’t know what your goals are, your odds of hitting them is not very good.

Think goals first, then strategies. In this context a good business goal will be an objective with a time component and at least one other measurable aspect. For the purposes of business goals, soon is not a time and some is not an amount.

Here are a few examples of well structured business goals:

  • Double sales margins by the end of third quarter.
  • Increase subscription rates by 30% next month.
  • Generate enough revenue to cover your burn rate by the end of the year.

Goals can be at different levels for different purposes in an organization. Often times I think I have a goal and it becomes a strategy beneath a higher goal. I am getting better at this process by simply going through the process and you can too.

The important thing is to start to define what your goals are in quantifiable terms of time and measure. At least you will know more about the goal(s) and also where you are with respect to success as the date approaches.

Next, we will move on to defining strategies to meet your business goals.

Now I know my Goal, what are my Strategies?

Filed under: STEER Methodology — admin @ 1:24 pm

A Strategy Map is basically a spreadsheet or list of  your Goals, Strategies, Tactics and Tasks/Experiments. Imagine you are in a new city and need to get somewhere. The more complicated your trip, the more a map and some “where you are’” information might help. If anyone develops a GPS for business goals, please let me know.

In the last post I briefly covered goals. This entry will cover the next level down: Strategies. To help with this, let’s use a real example.

Goal – Increase the number of Page Views on my website by 10 times by 12/31/10.

Sounds good. Now, how do I make that happen?

Strategies, Tactics, Tasks and experiments.

One strategy might be to “Increase traffic from Search Engines through Search Engine Optimization (SEO)”.

Another might be “Increase traffic  through traditional marketing methods”

A third might be “Increase traffic through paid advertising”

There might be more strategies but about three is enough to manage for most efforts. Are these my final strategies? No, but this is a good starting point.

Before we move on to the Tactics Level, let’s address using Brainstorming as a tool you can use with others, or just by yourself, to help further define this Strategy Map to give you a good tool to help meet your goals.

You can start the Strategy Map just about anywhere and work from there. I suggest you start with Brainstorming for undefined goals or use it once you have your Strategy Map framed out a bit to add ideas to the mix.

Tactics – That’s next.

Goals and Strategies drafted, now list some Tactics

Filed under: STEER Methodology — admin @ 2:14 pm

Here is where we are so far:

Goal – Increase the number of Page Views on my website by 10 times by 12/31/10.

  • One strategy might be to “Increase traffic from Search Engines through Search Engine Optimization (SEO)”.
  • Another might be “Increase traffic  through traditional marketing methods”
  • A third might be “Increase traffic through paid web advertising”

So we have one measurable and clear Goal and three suggested Strategies. Now we can list some Tactics under each Strategy that we think will help us reach our stated Goal. This is good time to review the efforts of the brainstorming task to see what task ideas there might be from that and use the Strategies to organize them.

Let’s just pick the second strategy as it might be most familiar and list some off the top of the head things we might want to consider:

Strategy – Increase traffic  through traditional marketing methods

  • Increase efforts to publicize our website through our existing marketing efforts
  • Advertise our website
  • Review our competition and see what is working and not working for them
  • etc.

You likely can list more tactics for this strategy pretty easily. The web is a great resource for researching these kinds of things.

You might take a look at Google for PDF files for “Top Ten Marketing Tips”. Click Here to do that search.

Anyway, go through your list as you wish and get at least a few Tactics for each Strategy.

Next, we take a look at the Tasks/Experiments level.

April 26, 2010

The Tasks/Experiments level

Filed under: STEER Methodology — admin @ 4:40 pm

Once you have a draft of your strategies and tactics, you are now at the task/experiment level. The reason I suggest the phrase task/experiment is that it is so helpful to think of tasks and experiments a little differently, even though they are at the same level in the Strategy Map.

For example, a task might be to call a trusted adviser and ask what they think you should do (by the way, calling a trusted adviser is one of the most effective easy things to do for most people). Calling a trusted adviser is more of a task than an experiment as you know you can make a call and get through typically. And if you have done it before you likely know that it often helps.

An experiment is more of something that you are trying to see if it works that you are not familiar with. An example might be to place a trackable ad that you can monitor the results and see if it had a return on investment or showed promise. The important component of an experiment is that you measure the results to see the results.

This task or experiment might be a fine line for some people but it helps some of us to try to separate them philosophically, even though they are at the same level of the Strategy Map. If so, just consider anything you can do and review to be at the level of a task.

Continuing our example, here is what adding a few tasks/experiments might look like:

Strategy – Increase traffic  through traditional marketing methods

  • Increase efforts to publicize our website through our existing marketing efforts
  1. Call our trusted adviser, Bill Smith, and ask him what he thinks we should do for this Tactic.
  2. Place an ad in our monthly magazine for our new offering with a discount if they provide the coupon code and act by the end of the month.
  3. etc..
  • Advertise our website
  1. etc.
  2. etc.
  • Review our competition and see what is working and not working for them
  1. etc.
  2. etc.

Go through all your strategies and tactics and list the tasks and experiments that you think might be a good idea. Putting this information into a spreadsheet format and assigning tasks with due dates really gives you a pretty good way to know where you are in trying to meet your goals, how you might get there and how you are doing.

Like a lot of documents for organizing, the Strategy Map should be a “living document”. This just means that you created it, refer to it regularly and then update it when you have more refined or different ideas.

A Strategy Map should provide some quick clarity to the Goals you have set for your business. It can really help you to know how things are going and provide new ideas that you can try and then measure the results.

Good luck and questions and comments are encouraged.
